The Meaning of a Baby or Child in a Dream

What precious thing needs care and nuturing in your life?
What precious thing needs care and nurturing in your life?

Babies and children in dreams can mean a variety of things.

They can refer to our own inner child, the part of us that remains innocent, spontaneous, playful and trusting.  These kind of baby dreams ask us to look to where in our life we need nurturing.  Do you need to take better care of yourself, or maybe you have judged your self harshly and need to be a bit kinder and gentler to your self.

A baby or child in a dream can mean a new project in your life, something that you create and nurture as “your baby.”  The age of the baby can sometimes indicate when this project started or was “conceived.”

If you lose or forget the baby in your dream, you might feel a terrible sense of sadness or guilt.  Look for where in your life you feel you have lost something precious.  This might be a new loss, like loss of a job, giving up something personally valuable to you in order to achieve another goal, or help someone you care about.  It might also be an old loss,  remembrance from a pain in your past that is unresolved, when the innocent, trusting part of you was hurt or let down.  Baby dreams ask us to address these issues, so we can feel trusting and happy again.

A child or baby in a dream is often a symbol of all things we associate with youth – vibrancy, energy, innocence, trust, purity, imagination, simple joy, spontaneity and open, inquisitive minds. But they can also have a shadow side, and refer to naievity, vulnerability, immaturity, selfishness, tantrums and inability to take care of one’s self. If you dream of a baby or child, consider what values seem most relevant from your own particular dream. It can help as well to reflect on how the baby or child made you feel in the dream. Did you feel a need to protect it from harm? There may be an area of your life, or aspect of your personality that you feel is threatened. Did it make you feel joyous, and alive? Perhaps you are appreciating some of the more simple things in life. Did it make you feel wistful, or nostalgic? This may be an indication that you are making choices in your waking life that in some way disconnect you from things you still hold dear from childhood, but feel you must sacrifice. Can you find a way to bring some of those special qualities back into your life now? Sometimes, a child in a dream can even create a haunting feeling. This may be a sign that something precious to you has been suppressed for a long time, and it may be very difficult to admit this to your self. Pain from childhood, a need to grow up too early and other similar trials can manifest in such dreams. It may take time to feel able to face up to such long hidden feelings, but a dream that calls you in this way is encouraging you that you are strong enough, and that you can start to work your way along the path that leads to peace and happiness.

And while it is not the most common reason for people to dream of babies, some women do realise they are pregnant by dreaming of their baby.  This is because the subconscious mind often knows before  the conscious mind what is going on in the body, and will send us messages to let us know!

The important thing to remember, is that even if you dream of your own children, or children you know, these are usually symbols your mind is using to express an idea to you.  There is no need to feel anxious or guilty over your parenting skills, but you might want to look at what other causes for anxiety there are in your life, and remember it is just as important to care for and nurture your self as it is to care for your baby.

  2. I had a dream early this morning right before I woke up. In my dream I was dating my ex again but I didn’t really like him as much. There was a scene where I was sitting on his lap facing him in a chair and we were kissing but he looked different and I didn’t like it. Sometime after this I believe, I was pregnant, like almost ready to give birth. In my dream I was over at my exes house, but its wasn’t his house in real life, and his mom took me somewhere in the house. The next thing I remember was being normal again and almost like I had forgotten that I was pregnant and I left his house. Then I was with my mom and i think my cousin in this house, not sure whose, and I came across a baby, Mexican looking, and I couldn’t tell if it was a boy or a girl but it kind of looked like my cousins baby boy, but despite that I called it a girl and I had hope that it was mine. Then I realized it wasn’t and so I sat on the floor next to my mother and I started to think, ” what if my ex boyfriends mom drugged me and stole and killed my baby?” and so I presented this idea to my mom and she says, “YEAH! I think that is what she did.” Then all of a sudden as she is saying that I don’t know if I was screaming or what but it was a loud ringing noise in my ears and I just started sobbing and saying stuff like “nooooooooo, my baby.” It was like all of a sudden I remembered that she had drugged me for a few days and maybe I was in denial over my loss. It was the worst feeling ever. I really felt like a mother who had lost her child. I was trying to imagine my baby and how I could get her back but nothing made sense because she was gone. Anyways I was really sad once I stopped crying and then later I had sex with my ex again hoping that I would get pregnant, but I knew it wasn’t going to work.

I’m not pregnant but I have never had a dream like this and so I’m just wondering what your interpretation is.
    Thanks

    P.S.
I did have a pregnancy scare in October when I missed a period for the first time and I have been thinking about pregnancy a lot since then. Also shortly after my best friend found out that she is pregnant. Maybe this matters, maybe it doesn’t.

  3. I am not a mother but I definitely want to be one. My mother came to me two weeks ago and told me she had a dream about a baby. The baby was in a crib in her house and she seemed to be babysitting for someone. Then this morning I had a dream I was at my mother’s house and I started to experience labor pains but i didnt think i was pregnant. In fact i was folding clothes when this all started. The dream was so vivid. My mother came running up the steps where I was screaming in pain and bleeding and when she looked between my legs she smiled and said in her usual sarcastic way, “you never do things as planned, your in labor. Don’t push too hard! ” I eventually gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who looked so similar to my baby pics. I was so happy, he was crying at first then I held him and he silenced in peace. What does this mean?

  4. Well today I 2/26/16. Literally an hour ago I had a dream that my mom and dad were holding a baby. Then came to realize it was mine. I had to abort 2 babies cause I was to young to have them. Worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Anyway. I asked my mom what the name was. And the baby name was exactly what I was going to name mine Emily. When I held her I felt this relief and happiness all throughout my body. She was beautiful for sure lol. But my question is.. What can that mean? I do remember before getting to the baby part I was with friend living my normal life. Any ideas on what this could mean. I’ve been for a bit now and I can’t get her face or that part of the dream out of my head.

  11. I dreamed that I was standing outside an old gray house in the grass. I was much younger; in my twenties. My wife pulled up in her car with our second child (a boy) that was only two days old. I wasn’t at the hospital when the baby was born; this was the first time I ever saw him. The baby walked up to me and hugged me. It was so lovely; we were so happy! The child was like one of those babies in a renaissance painting; the fact that it could walk and the fact that I wasn’t at the hospital seemed peculiar. I was also aware that we never actually had a second son – we had a boy and a girl; both of whom are now grown-up. The next thing I remember was the grass outside of this old gray house had pools of water in all the ditches and tire tracks that had been left behind by some tractors. It must have rained while the baby and I napped in the field. I was in a pool of water but the baby was gone. He must have floated away while we were sleeping.

I had a dream last night that a friend I use to work with came to my job with an infant baby boy; I took the baby and placed it under my coat. I traveled with the baby home
however the baby died. I was afraid to tell my friend but when I did, her respond was I told that girl the baby was not going to live because it was premature. I was relived
and no longer felt it was something I had caused.
